My name’s Edwina Guckian from Drumsna, Co. Leitrim. I’m am writing to you about my Sean Nós dancing group in the All Ireland Talent Show. Here’s a quick bit of info about us.
We’re called Sean Nós ar an tSionann and we’re representing Daithí Ó Sé and the West in The All Ireland Talent Show.
The 10 of us come from Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Kerry and range from 8 – 26 years old. We are a sean nos dancing group based in Carrick on Shannon. We are all members of Comhaltas Eireann and between us we play fiddle, banjo, bodhran, box, drums, flute, concertina and whistle.
On New Year’s eve we took to the stage on the first of the live shows. We topped the Public vote putting us straight through to the semi finals in March.
On March 13th we take to the stage again to battle it out with 4 other contestants in a bid to win the All Ireland Talent Show.
If we win we want to give €10,000 of the prize money to Our Lady’s Hospital for sick children, Crumlin.
There are quite a few very special children who attend my sean nós classes every week that would not be dancing with us if it were not for Our Lady’s Hospital. We want to do it for those children and everyone who attends that hospital. They receive no Government funding so it’s a very worthy cause. Doing it for sean nós, for Daíthí, for our counties, for Our Lady’s Hospital and FOR THE WEST!
VOTE SEAN NÓS AR AN tSIONANN MARCH 13TH RTE 1, 6.30PM.
The public vote is what makes the difference so make your vote count

There is great delight locally with the news that Carrick on Shannon has been designated as a ‘Fairtrade Town’. This red letter day for Carrick will be marked by a formal presentation ceremony at The Dock on Friday, March 4th, at 1pm. There will also be music and street entertainers at The Market Yard Centre, starting at 11.30 am. A special feature will be the Fairtrade ‘Divine Chocolate’ Wagon complete with a chocolate fountain! This is during Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from 28th February to the 13th March.
A dedicated few, including Sr. Nora Burke and Dermott McNabb did a lot of work over the past few years in raising awareness and involving local businesses and the local community in the campaign. The local parish achieved Fairtrade status in June 2008 and the goal was then to achieve official designation for the whole town. Carrick Chamber became involved in the campaign and a Fairtrade Steering Group, chaired by Ben Conlon, was set up with additional support from Leitrim County Council.
