Leitrim Village is the place to be for the May bank holiday weekend 2015! A brand new festival to celebrate the newly designated Shannon Blueway will feature canoeing, kayaking, SUP, trail cycling, electric biking, horse-riding, trail-running, guided walks, dragon boat racing and an adventure race. And if that doesn’t float you boat there will be a food and craft fair in Leitrim Village with music and entertainment in the local pubs.

The Shannon Blueway Adventure Festival is a weekend of activities and entertainment to celebrate the start of the summer season on the Blueway. The festival takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend and, amongst a host of activities for all ages and abilities, includes two flagship events; The Shannon Blueway Adventure Race and The Great Dragon Boat Race.

Activities start on Friday evening with a fishing competition on the Shannon Erne canal and a heritage wander through the village and onto the Blueway. There will be a traditional Irish music session at Beirnes of Battlebridge and Live Music in the Barge on Friday night. Saturday morning bright and early River Mania will depart Carrick-on-Shannon on a guided blueway paddle converging by kayak in Leitrim Village. A Blueway walk will also depart from Beirnes of Battlebridge on Saturday morning for those with a more leisurely sense of adventure.

The Shannon Blueway Adventure race in aid of Diabetes Ireland will allow competitors to experience the Blueway by foot, water and bicycle. Paddling the waterways, climbing Sheemore, running or cycling along the Blueway and beyond, participants will race through spectacular scenery. The Blueway Entertainment village at the Leitrim Marina Hotel will provide fun for all the family on Saturday evening and the TUMBLIN PADDIES an exciting new Trad, Folk and Ballad group will provide entertainment into the small hours at the Leitrim Inn.

There will be plenty of opportunity to blow off the cobwebs on Sunday with three guided walks taking place; a guided Eco Farm Walk & Boat Ride on the lake shore of Mount Allen organic farm; a Canal Bank Walk from St. Josephs Centre in Leitrim Village at noon and a special Leitrim Landscapes Guided Walk as part of The Big Day Out in Leitrim. Other activities running throughout the afternoon along the blueway include Canoeing, Electric Bike Blueway Tasters, Trail cycling, Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayak Safaris. A Craft & Food Fair on main- street and a vintage car drive-through will set the atmosphere in the village.

The inaugural Shannon Blueway Dragon Boat Race will see 10 teams compete with up to 16 people per team. Training sessions are planned making this an excellent opportunity for any organisation/pub/club to get involved in a team building event. And the fun doesn’t stop there. A live music trail starts at 5pm with a traditional music session in Donnellans Pub, as well as live music in the Marina Hotel, followed by Pete the Piper in Lough 17/Carthys from 7, and live music in the Leitrim Marina Hotel from 10pm-late.

On Monday a Blueway Ride and Splash with Moorlands Equestrian Centre will round off a great weekend of activity.
