Carrick on Shannon Chamber Holds Meeting With Minister and IDA on MBN

Carrick on Shannon Chamber has today (31/8/11) met with Minister Richard Bruton T.D., and with the CEO of the IDA, Mr Barry O' Leary to discuss efforts to find a new buyer for Bank of America following their exit from the credit card business.

Chamber President, Gerry Faughnan, said “We are very pleased to have had an opportunity to meet with the Minister and the CEO of the IDA, Barry O'Leary.

We stated our firm opinion that all efforts be made to sell the business in its entirety to ensure jobs are preserved in Carrick on Shannon. The business is profitable and we have a highly skilled workforce in an extremely cost competitive base. We're only an hour and a half from Dublin and Knock International Airport is nearby.

The Minister said that he will 'leave no stone unturned' in his efforts to sell the business as a going concern, all options will be examined, and that Barry O'Leary, CEO of the IDA has huge experience to deal with the issue. The minister also stated that he will be meeting with Bank of America in the US in three weeks time''

Carrick on Shannon Chamber statement re the announcement from Bank of America today 15th August, 2011

Carrick on Shannon Chamber notes with disappointment the announcement from Bank of America today (15/08/2011).

Speaking this evening Chamber President Gerry Faughnan said ‘Bank of America have been a valued employer and investor in the region over many years. They will be missed. However the company leaves behind a substantial, skilled, cost effective and diverse work force that is ready and willing to work with a new investor.  The Chamber looks forward to working with and welcoming any investors interested in purchasing the operation and are confident that our location and cost base will be of interest to other investors in due course’ .

Carrick Chamber Calls For Free Parking Period

Carrick Chamber has called on the local authority to introduce an initial free parking period to provide a boost for the town's hard-pressed businesses. They claim this is in line with waivers granted by another local authority, Blackrock, in Dublin, where the first hour's parking is free.
The Chamber initially made the suggestion over two years ago, and again in a submission last October, but claim the need is now critical in the current economic climate.
Chamber president, Gerry Faughnan, stated that "We view the existence of the out of town shopping areans as an opportunity due to the huge amount of shoppers they attract. But the fact that there is free parking in those areas cripples the town centre. All we're asking for is an initial free parking period of 15 to 30 minutes and we have now formally proposed that again to the council.
We view it as crucial that shoppers who wish to make a quick purchase on a brief stop are not put off visiting the town centre. It is not the small fee involved, it's the availability of no hassle, free parking elsewhere. We understand that this 'free period' system operates successfully in Blackrock, in Dublin where the first hour is free" he continued.
"We know that the council's position is that the town metering is revenue neutral and mainly about keeping a constant supply of parking spaces available. Our proposal therefore shouldn't be a major issue as the cost would be negligible anyway. The benefits, however, in terms of attracting shopping traffic, would be enormous."
He concluded by stating "We appreciate from our dealings with the council that they are acutely tuned in to the difficulties of doing business at the present time. It is also in their interest to have as many rate payers as possible and we look forward to the support of the local councillors in this matter".

He was centrally involved in setting up the Ireland Fund which has raised more than $350 million for peace and education programmes in Ireland'. He concluded by saying that 'US investment in Ireland is crucial to our economy and the presence locally of large scale employers Bank of America and Masonite bear witness to that fact'.

The 'Open Forum' event entitled 'Conversation with the Ambassador' was held last week in The Dock Arts Centre, Carrick and was moderated by Mr. Chris Rendo, Political Officer at the US Embassy.

A lively question and answer session was enjoyed by the attendees, including local business people, representatives of the community in Leitrim and pupils from various schools.

Carrick Designated 'Fairtrade Town'.

There is great delight locally with the news that Carrick on Shannon has been designated as a 'Fairtrade Town'. This red letter day for Carrick will be marked by a formal presentation ceremony at The Dock on Friday, March 4th, at 1pm. There will also be music and street entertainers at The Market Yard Centre, starting at 11.30 am. A special feature will be the Fairtrade 'Divine Chocolate' Wagon complete with a chocolate fountain! This is during Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from 28th February to the 13th March.

A dedicated few, including Sr. Nora Burke and Dermott McNabb did a lot of work over the past few years in raising awareness and involving local businesses and the local community in the campaign. The local parish achieved Fairtrade status in June 2008 and the goal was then to achieve official designation for the whole town. Carrick Chamber became involved in the campaign and a Fairtrade Steering Group, chaired by Ben Conlon, was set up with additional support from Leitrim County Council.

The official launch by Fairtrade Mark Ireland will take place during Fairtrade Fortnight, on Friday 4th March, at The Dock at 1 pm. Guests of honour on this day will include cocoa farmers from Ghana, who have been invited to Ireland especially for Fairtrade Fortnight to highlight and explain how Fairtrade has impacted on their lives and the lives of those they work with.

The day will also see a visit from the Fairtrade 'Divine Chocolate' wagon at The Market Yard Centre, which will feature a chocolate fountain where you can sample some of Divine’s delicious Fairtrade chocolate. So while you sample some yummy chocolate you can learn about Fairtrade and the story of chocolate from bean to bar. This is sure to be a popular attraction! Also sure to be crowd pleasers in The Market Yard Centre on the day will be Street Entertainers, Traditional Music and Tai Chi demonstrations. So be sure to join in the Party Celebrations from 11.30 am.

Sr. Nora Burke commented that “It’s a great day for Carrick on Shannon and Leitrim. It’s the first town in Leitrim to achieve this status and let’s hope this is an incentive for others to follow suit. I’m deeply grateful to all the businesses that have been so patient with me over the past few years in my efforts to encourage and motivate them to stock Fairtrade products”. She concluded by thanking Siobhan O' Malley, Director of The Dock. "Siobhan has been invaluable in first of all helping with the formation of the Steering Group and her hospitality for all our meetings in the past few months".

Steering Group chairperson, Ben Conlon said that he wished to thank all those who helped to make this achievement possible, and especially Leitrim County Council and the Leitrim Development Company for their financial support. “This is just the start", says Ben, "we must continue to make people aware of the importance of buying Fairtrade products and the impact this has on people in the developing world. We must strive to increase the range of products available in the shops and also get all companies and community groups in Carrick on Shannon to use Fairtrade products.”

Carrick Chamber President, Gerry Faughnan, said that the Chamber got involved in this project at the behest of one of their members, Ray Gannon, and is delighted to help out on such a worthwhile cause. "People often feel they would like to do something to help poorer people in far flung parts, and supporting Fairtrade is one positive way of doing it", he added.

Leitrim County Manager Jackie Maguire states that “Leitrim County Council is committed to the promotion of Fairtrade in Carrick-on-Shannon and wishes to congratulate the Fairtrade Steering Group on their dedication and hard work in achieving Fairtrade status for Carrick-on-Shannon."

The list of local businesses and groups who support Fairtrade continues to grow and the Steering Group are grateful for their support. The work will continue, with the aim of getting more places to participate.

So, what is Fairtrade:- Many farmers and workers in developing countries struggle to provide for their families. Poor market access and unfair trade often mean that the price they get for their crop does not cover the cost of production. Fairtrade labelling is a rapidly growing international system which seeks to guarantee a better deal for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade means paying better prices, ensuring decent working conditions, education for children and no child labour on farms, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers in the developing world. Fairtrade promotes the purchase of Fairtrade products as a way that ordinary people can make a difference to the lives of producers. A product that is Fairtrade certified carries a label, the FAIRTRADE MARK. By choosing to support Fairtrade, the community can add its voice to demands for a trade system that puts people, not profit, at the heart of the transaction.

For more information on Fairtrade and activities around the country during Fairtrade Fortnight please see www.fairtrade.ie.

Carrick Chamber Welcomes Council Win in Local Government Awards

Carrick Chamber welcomes the well deserved win by Leitrim County Council at the 'Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2010' for 'Outstanding Customer Service'. This was in respect of the Council's  response to the Flooding Crisis in the county last year. The Council was shortlisted for six awards, the most in the country apart from Dublin, and the nominations were endorsed by Carrick Chambe

At the time of the crisis one common thread coming to the Chamber, from both businesses and the general public, was universal praise for Leitrim County Council and its response to an unprecedented situation in the town and surrounding areas. The Council was efficiently rerouting traffic, keeping the N4 open with pumps, bringing in extra staff, providing 15,000 sandbags, ensuring the integrity of the water supply, providing temporary walkways, and generally being very helpful to businesses and residents. The outdoor staff had to bear atrocious weather conditions around the clock. The management team were available to keep us informed of developments. Behind the scenes a Crisis Management Team, chaired by County Manager, Jackie Maguire, met twice daily to coordinate efforts involving a range of other agencies.

Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive said, “As one of the main partners in local government countrywide, the Chamber network recognises and appreciates the daily work of local authorities on behalf of us all. We acknowledge that local government faces unprecedented funding challenges while also needing to control costs and budgets many of which are beyond their control and are driven by decisions taken centrally and from Government budgetary allocations.”

Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley T.D. continued, “Once again I am delighted that my Department is associated with Chambers Ireland's Excellence in Local Government Awards, which highlights best practice among local authorities, thus enabling a diffusion of excellence.”

The event was supported by An Post, CB Richard Ellis, Corrib Natural Gas, ESB Networks, and Zurich. Awards were also sponsored by AECOM, Brief Council Ltd, Fáilte Ireland, Optic Nerve Design and Peninsula Business Services. Each winner was presented with a specially commissioned trophy designed by Tipperary Crystal.

Carrick Chamber Delighted at Entente Florale Success

Carrick Chamber is delighted with the county town's major achievement in winning Gold in the Entente Florale Europe Competition which was announced at a ceremony in Cervia, Italy. We are delighted that all the hard work put in by so many has brought a singular honour to Carrick, and Ireland, in such a prestigious, International Competition. The Chamber was pleased to have been represented on the joint coordinating committee along with representatives from the Tidy Towns committee and Leitrim County Council. The leadership of this committee was crucial in rallying support for a great community effort and gives inspiration to us all as to what can be achieved when we put our minds to it.

Great credit is due to all the Tidy Town volunteers who put in a heroic amount of work painting, tidying and almost daily litter picking; to county manager, Jackie Maguire, and all her colleagues in Leitrim Co Council who were fully committed to the project and did a huge amount of work all around the town and to our colleagues in the business community who made Trojan efforts painting their premises, donating money, and providing floral arrangements. There was also a great community response from various residents' groups. It was great to see so many people take pride in their work.

A constant stream of favourable comments has been received by the Chamber from visitors, locals and business people from other towns. One recurring comment is 'the town has never looked so well'.

The Chamber views the Tidy Town's Committee's efforts as crucial to Carrick which relies so much on tourism and saw the Entente Florale as a unique opportunity to showcase Carrick.

We were also pleased to have facilitated a meeting between the Tidy Towns, Cortober Residents and Roscommon County Council to up the ante on the Cortober side of the river and the judges were very impressed with the results especially in the newly replanted park.

Carrick was one of only two places chosen to represent Ireland because of the annual increase in our marks in the Tidy Towns Competition over the past number of years.  The other candidate, the village of Emly, County Tipperary, which won National Tidy Towns Competition last year, achieved a 'Silver' award in the Entente.

The stiffness of the competition can be judged by the fact that of entrants from twelve countries in the 'Town' category only four 'Golds' were awarded. In 2009 only one was awarded in the same category. It is also interesting to note that this year's National Tidy Towns winner, Tallenstown, County Louth, won Gold in the village section of the Entente in 2008.

At the end of day it's not all about business. It's great to live in a town that looks good and is a pleasant place to be in. The challenge will be to maintain the standard and up the ante for 2011.

24th June Carrick Fun Day!!!

Carrick to Host Summer Fun Day

A Lakelands & Inland Waterways ‘Fun Day’ of free entertainment is due to be held in Carrick on Saturday, on July 24th. This follows on from the huge success of last year’s Lakelands & Inland Waterways ‘Discover Carrick’.

Carrick Chamber is coordinating a committee of local business people and voluntary organisations to provide a major programme of events to appeal to all ages supported by Lakelands & Inland Waterways.

Lakelands & Inland Waterways is a joint partnership between FáilteIreland and Waterways Ireland. The Carrick Fun Day is also being supported by Leitrim Tourism, the Chamber and the Bank of America.

In what promises to be a jam packed schedule, local businesses and clubs are lining up to provide a host of land and water based activities. Last year the organising committee’s efforts drew unprecedented crowds into town and were well received by locals and tourists alike.

The Fun Day will coincide with ceremonies to mark the 50th Shannon Boat Rally organised by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI).

Martin Dennany Director of Marketing & Communications, Waterways Ireland said “The Carrick-on-Shannon Fun Day will reinforce to locals the incredible diversity and quality of attractions, activities and entertainments in this area, building on the success of the 2009 Discover Carrick–on-Shannon.  It will enhance the capacity of everyone to promote Carrick-on-Shannon nationally and internationally and is expected to have an impact on tourist numbers and the local economy.”

Speaking at the launch Martina Bromley, Fáilte Ireland North West, said “We hope the event will give local people a greater awareness of what there is to see and do in their community and therefore, allow them to act as ambassadors for their region with both domestic and overseas visitors. They may even consider inviting friends to join them for the weekend to sample the delights of Carrick-on-Shannon and its environs.

Ireland’s Lakelands and Inland Waterways can provide unique experiences for everyone.  The natural environment provides excellent opportunities to participate in a huge range of sightseeing, cultural and outdoor activities.”

Joseph Gilhooley, Director of Services, Leitrim County council stated “Leitrim County Council and Leitrim Tourism are very happy to be in a position to support the Carrick on Shannon Fun Day.  The continued hosting of such events provides excellent opportunity to showcase again the tremendous attributes of the town located on the majestic river Shannon.  Based on the success of last year’s event we are looking forward to a very enjoyable day in the town”

Gerry Faughnan, President of Carrick Chamber, said they were delighted to support the Fun Day in order to continue promoting the local tourism industry.

If you wish to be involved, or have an idea for this project, contact Odette or Karolina at the Chamber office on 071 9622245. Scheduling is tight so don’t delay.

FBD Ras 24th May!

Chamber Pleased With FBD RAS Success

Following the recent Stage 2 Finish of the FBD RAS in Carrick the president of Carrick Chamber, Gerry Faughnan, stated that “We are very pleased to have brought such a prestigious international event as the FBD RAS to Carrick. This was a major event for us to have taken on as Stage End Coordinators and thankfully the unfortunate accident didn’t result in life-threatening injuries.

“The event was hugely successful in generating extensive coverage in the national dailys, TV and international media. 400 bed nights were filled in hotels and B&B’s in Carrick and out as far as Leitrim Village and Rooskey on what would have been a quiet Monday night. The event generated a good portion of colour, excitement and spectacle.

“A lot of people helped with this project and I thank them all very much”, he continued. “However, there is one person who we have to thank in particular and that is Chamber member Colm McGrath, of Brady’s Insurance, our Stage End coordinator. Colm has put an enormous amount of work into this event over the last few months and its success is mainly down to him. The main organisers expressed themselves as very happy with arrangements on the ground”.

He concluded by saying “We will continue to work to maintain the profile of Carrick as a vibrant town and a good place to visit, to live in and do business in”.

Stage End Coordinator, Colm McGrath said “The cyclists really appreciated the crowds that greeted them on arrival and again on departure the following morning.

“I would like to thank all those who assisted in the success of the event: - Leitrim county council, especially Jackie Maguire, Joseph Gilhooly and David Gibbons for all their help and also for providing a civic reception; Roscommon county council, especially Frank Dawson, Majella Hunt and Eugene Dwyer; Race Director Dermot Dignam and Eddie Dawson; members of An Garda Siochana and especially Inspector Jim Delaney and Sergeant Cara Kiernan; Sinead McDermott, of Leitrim Tourism, who coordinated all the accommodation; Mary Farrelly and all at The Market Yard Centre and all the volunteers who helped on the day”.

A product that is Fairtrade certified carries a label, the FAIRTRADE MARK. By choosing to support Fairtrade, the community can add its voice to demands for a trade system that puts people, not profit, at the heart of the transaction.

Carrick Chamber President on 'Open Forum' with US Ambasador.

Carrick Chamber President, Gerry Faughnan, was delighted to be contacted by the US Embassy and requested to participate in a panel with the US Ambassador to Ireland, Mr Daniel M. Rooney. Also on the panel was Mr John Blunnie, CEO, Co. Leitrim VEC.

Mr Faughnan said later 'It was a singular privilege to meet Ambassador Rooney, a man who involved himself in trying to bring peace to this Island since the 1970's.

Mr Rooney's family roots are in Newry, and those of his wife, Patricia, who accompanied him, are closer to home in Ballaghaderreen.
